Ustaz Muhammad Tarmizi bin Abdul Wahid is someone who should be well-known to the visitors to this site. As CEO and founder of Safinah Institute, Ustaz Tarmizi is a well-respected teacher of Islam, conducting classes and seminars for the Muslim community here in Singapore. Writing here under the nom de plume Mizi Wahid, the writer himself notes in the preface that Prayers for Success intends to go beyond simply providing a list of supplications (du’a ) for the reference of the average Muslim. It aims to give Muslims living in the modern context a practical guide to make du’a a part of our daily ibadah and effectively make supplication to Allah, by explaining how to make supplications, what to ask for, why we supplicate to Allah, how our prayers are answered and things that impede our prayers from being answered.

There are few, if any, books written in English that address the topics that Prayers for Success does. It’s a rare text that is written in English, draws on the Qur’an and Sunnah, using real-life examples to illustrate the power of prayer and absolute faith in Allah and attempts to stay relevant to everyday life. I myself found much that I had yet to implement in my own prayers.

I especially found Step 18 ‘Make Gratitude Your Daily Attitude’, with its recommendation of making a gratitude list to be something I myself wanted to introduce into my daily worship, beyond merely making supplications, and something anybody could easily put into action.

It’s easy to be cynical and take the view that Prayers for Success is yet another self-help book. And it’s true that it is a self-help book. But it’s one of the best kinds, that aspires to help us improve our condition in this life and the next by increasing our faith in Allah. May Allah bless the Ustaz’s efforts,
and continue to make him a source of benefit for the ummah.
