5 March 2010 | 19 Rabiul Awal 1431: The Honourable Personality of Our Beloved Prophet S.A.W. (Part 2)
Dear Blessed Congregation,
Let us increase our taqwa to Allah s.w.t. Perform our duties to Allah s.w.t. and refrain from all His prohibitions. Love our Holy Prophet s.a.w. by emulating his examples. May our sincere effort to follow in his blessed footsteps bring us the pleasure and mercy of Allah s.w.t.
Dear Blessed Congregation,
The life of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. is a source of shining guidance and full of powerful lessons for Muslims at all places and times.
In his honourable character and personality, we find the best example for our lives, whether in our relationship with our Creator, or with other people, and with the world around us.
In this blessed month of his birth, let us reflect on his honourable personality and learn from his glorious examples, so that we will continue to be religiously resilient, progressive, and we can become blessings to all.
Dear blessed brothers,
The Prophet’s love and compassion for his ummah is mentioned by Allah s.w.t. in a beautiful verse in surah Al-Taubah verse 128:
Which means: “Verily, there has come to You a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.) from amongst yourselves, it grieves Him that You should receive any injury or difficulty. He is anxious over You (for your well-being), for the believers (He is) the most kind and compassionate.”
His love is not limited to his followers and the believers. But his love and compassion encompassed those who even showed hatred and enmity towards him s.a.w.
This can be seen from the episode in Taif, after the Prophet s.a.w. met with a hostile reception from the Quraisy to his dakwah in Mekkah.
At Taif, the Prophet s.a.w. was rejected. But beyond rejection, the poor, the slaves and the children of Bani Thaqif threw stones at him, and in the process, injured the legs of the Prophet s.a.w.
It was reported that Allah sent the angels guarding the mountains around Taif to offer the Prophet an option of destroying the people of Taif by moving the mountains unto them.
But the Holy Prophet s.a.w. rejected the offer, and with his compassion, he offered a prayer instead “Even if they reject Islam, I pray to Allah that their descendants will worship Allah s.w.t.”
Think about this. The Prophet s.a.w. did not harbour revenge when he could. He did not despair and give up. But he chose to be optimistic. And what was the outcome? Nine years after the migration to Madinah, a delegation from the same Bani Thaqif came to Madinah to accept the Prophet and embrace Islam.
In another incident, when the Prophet s.a.w. was preparing to leave for Madinah, he appointed Sayyidina Ali r.a. as a trustee to return all the deposits of the people of Makkah left with the Prophet s.a.w, to their rightful owners.
This is even so when there were Arab Quraish who rejected the Prophet s.a.w. But despite their rejection of Islam, they did not dispute nor doubt the truthfulness and trustworthiness of the Prophet s.a.w. His integrity was unparalleled and this was well-known by the people of Makkah.
Dear blessed congregation,
From the Sirah of the Prophet s.a.w, we find important lessons to guide us in our lives today:
First: The need for us to be religiously resilient, especially in difficult and testing times.
Second: The need for us to be adaptive and navigate ourselves through challenges that face us. We also need to be contributive and offer our helping hand to all those who need help, regardless of their background.
Therefore, we need to ask ourselves, how deep is our love for the Prophet s.a.w., after we have seen his compassion and honourable personality. After we have witnessed his contributions and examples for us?
Let us emulate the love of Anasbin Malik r.a. for the Prophet s.a.w. He reported that “A man came to the Prophet and asked: “O Messenger of Allah, when is the end of the world?” The Prophet replied “What have you prepared for it?” He answered: “My love for Allah and His Messenger.” The Prophet s.a.w. replied “You will be gathered with whom you love.” Anas r.a. said:“Eversince we accepted Islam, we have never been happier than hearing the Prophet say “You will be gathered with whom you love.” Anas r.a. said again:“I love Allah, His Messenger, Abu Bakar and Umar, and hopefully I am gathered with them, even if my deeds are not on par with theirs.” Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim.
May our love for the Prophet s.a.w. strengthen our resolve to follow in his footsteps. May our love for him be the reason for us to be gathered with him in the hereafter. Amin.
Khutbah: 5 February 2010 | 20 Safar 1431: The Value of Ihsan in Islam
Masyiral Muslimin Rahimakumullah,
Let us increase our taqwa to Allah s.w.t. Reflect on the conditions of ourselves. Think of where we stand in Allah’s sight. If we are doing good, do more. On the contrary, if we are doing wrong things and committing sins, then stop. Let us ensure through our acts and deeds that with each day, we get closer to Allah s.w.t. With each second, we stand firmer on the footsteps of the Prophet s.a.w.
Remember, dear brothers, that it is part of our responsibility (amanah) to do good and spread ihsan (kindness). As Muslims who are capable of spreading kindness, we should do so more and more, regardless of time, place and situation.
Allah s.w.t. says in surah al-Nisaa’ verse 58,
Which means:
“Surely Allah commands you to make over trusts to their owners and that when you judge between people you judge with justice; surely Allah admonishes you with what is excellent; surely Allah is Seeing, Hearing.”
Imam Ibn Kathir explains this verse, “The responsibility warranted here is the fulfillment of duties to Allah s.w.t. such as the five daily prayers, fasting and others. This is followed by the rights of other human beings which must be justly fulfilled.”
Each of us will be further inspired to spread ihsan if we understand well that Islam teaches us to respect and treat human beings with dignity. This dignity of humankind is mentioned clearly in Surah al-Israa’ verse 70:
Which means:
“We have honoured the sons of Adam; provided them with transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance things good and pure; and conferred on them special favours, above a great part of our creation.”
Look at how Allah has honoured humankind. He blesses them with countless blessings. Allah grants them with His bounties. The Holy Prophet s.a.w. had manifested this respect for humanity in his life. The Prophet s.a.w. did not discriminate against anyone in offering them a helping hand or respect, not for their wealth or poverty, nor for their background.
Indeed, the honourable personality of the Prophet s.a.w. who treated everyone with respect, whether a friend or a foe, has brought honour and excellence to Islam and caused it to spread across the world.
There are many examples from the Prophet s.a.w. Once, the Prophet s.a.w. stood up in respect for a funeral of a Jew which passed before him. When asked by the companions, the Prophet s.a.w. replied “Is he not a human being?” Hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim.
This is the honourable personality and moral conduct of our beloved Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Let us internalise this example and appreciate the value of humanity, as how the Prophet s.a.w. has shown us.
Some of us may choose to whom they wish to be good. Part of the reason is because pre-judge others from what we see. If we consider someone bad, we may not want to help him/her.
However, we should remind ourselves that only Allah s.w.t. knows the true value of our iman. He guides whom He wishes. Even, we as Muslims, we cannot say with certainty what will be our destiny. Let us reflect on what Allah s.w.t. says in surah Al-Nahl verse 125:
Which means:
“Surely your God best knows those who go astray from His path, and He knows best those who follow the right way.”
Only Allah knows the state of our iman, and that of the person next to us, or those who walk before us. But our duty, which applies to all, is to give others their right, not to pre-judge them. Thus, let us truly understand the teachings of the Prophet s.a.w., especially with regards to appreciating the values of humanity and ihsan (kindness).
Dear blessed congregation,
As an example of ihsan and kindness to all, is how we react to communities who are affected by natural disasters. Lately, we hear of many disasters that have afflicted several communities around the world. Alhamdulillah, our Singaporean Muslim community have always offered help with their contributions.
Such deeds should continue, and infact, be strengthened further. These are acts of kindness that transcend colour, religion and continent. With our sincerity, we will become an examplary and inspirational community to others. With ihsan, we will get closer to Allah s.w.t. With ihsan, we will be loved more by Allah s.w.t.
Allah s.w.t. says in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 195:
Which means:
“But do good; for Allah loves those who do good.”
Allah s.w.t. also says in Surah Al-A’raaf verse 56:
Which means:
“for the Mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good.”
Dear Brothers in Islam
Let us not forget to be steadfast in our faith and to observe obedience towards Allah s.w.t., even during the joyous holiday. Let us be thankful to Allah for giving us the opportunity to continue living today, and giving us the will to strive and to make our aims to be his His khalifahs on the surface of this Earth a reality, by making it prosperous with all our good deeds and to restraint from all that are wrong. May this effort be rewarded with His blessings, as well as to include us amongst those who attain the intercession of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in the hereafter.
Dear blessed Jumaah congregation
As all of us are aware, today is the first day of the year 2010. As Muslims we should have the intelligence and vision, either collectively or individually, to ponder again on our future plans and what are our aims for this new year. Allah s.w.t. said in Surah al-Hasyr verse 18:
Which means:”O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah, and let every soul consider what it has sent on for the morrow, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do.”
Let us together use this verse as an inspiration for us to progress, using various initiatives that can inspire us to be better contributors than the day before. To the different levels of age groups present in this blessed gathering; children, teenagers, youths, adults and elders, increase the level of your knowledge, whether in religious or academic fields and in life skills. For those who are husbands or fathers, acquire a new skill that is fresh and relevant to supplement your role as the captains of Muslim families.
On this public holiday, I would like to call upon everyone here to seek various avenues and opportunities in increasing knowledge that is beneficial to all.
Zumratal Mukminin Rahimakumullah,
Current situations and environment often beckon healthy and productive minds to progress positively, for the sake of the community’s development. Ponder upon Allah s.w.t.’s words in Surah al-Zumar verse 9:
Which means: “Say: Are those who know and those who do not know alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful.”
Dear Brothers in Islam,
In the arena of religious knowledge, which is the pulse of the Muslim community, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore has introduced a new Islamic learning programme for adults. It is known as Adult Islamic Education or Adult IE, and is conducted in various mosques islandwide. This programme acts as a basic platform for those who wish to increase their Islamic knowledge and understanding, taking into consideration the contemporary and modern lifestyle of Singapore. Each lesson is enhanced with the usage of Powerpoint presentations, notes for every student and interactive discussions between the educators and students. Amongst the new subjects introduced through this programme is the Islamic Worldview. This subject focuses on discussions of mankind’s need for religion, it also highlights the basics of Islam, the beauty of Islam compared to other religions and it emphasizes on the final result that we aspire to achieve together as followers of this beautiful religion.
Looking into its contents, this subject provides students or participants with essential basic knowledge to overcome the challenges of the cosmopolitan life, with its different races and beliefs. This is very much required by the adults of the Muslim community in Singapore. As Muslims, we should return to our roots and pure Islamic principles. Do take a moment to ponder on our responsiblity towards our own welfare as well as the community’s. Prophet Muhammad s.a.w said,
Which means: Each of you are leaders, and are responsible for your followers. (As reported by Bukhari)
Dear blessed congregations,
Singapore Muslim community in general, has an important role to uplift the religious life in this particular secular state. Let us continue to strive to uplift ourselves as a contributive community. Let us support the good iniciatives that has been done for our benefits. That is by either taking part in the programmes or to give positive feedbacks. If there are any shortcomings and weaknesses, we, as a community member have the right to share ideas which are rational, factual and accurately presented. This will enhance the academics discussion’s culture objectively.
In reality, each knowledge we attain is an effort to render our services and contributions to mankind’s development and subsequently become progressive and respected Muslims.
There are also free religious knowledge services that can be found on Islamic websites such as Islamonline.net. Its contents consist of various knowledge guidance that cover all aspects of life, such as contemporary issues, a Muslim’s daily responsibilities, Islamic banking and finance, fatwas, religious questions and answers and parental skills. All these were compiled by a group of learned Muslim scholars and elitists who extend their service specifically for the purpose of delivering Allah’s amanah. Imagine, if we move forward progressively from now on, it is not impossible that someday in the future, our children or grandchildren become similar contributors to this website or even much better.
Dear beloved Brothers in Islam
Let us together again plant the spirit and desire to revive Islamic excellence in ourselves. We should not only be at the receiving end, waiting to except services and contributions, but it should be such that we are the main players of this world’s league. We live as individuals who understand the value of time and life’s aims. We build families with vision. We become knowledge-seekers who are excellent and hardworking, subsequently becoming contributors to mankind’s ever-growing civilisation and lastly, we bow humbly to our God Almighty Most Gracious. May we be included amongst those who succeed and blessed by Allah s.w.t. always. Amin.
