Assalammualaikum wr wb,

Alhamdulillah. Its been a long journey and we have since completed the 10th Majlis Selawat. Yesterday, the Majlis Selawat Committee had a post event meeting. A lot of negative feedback for the last session yet many constructive suggestions were given to improve future Majlis.

One of which is to balance the amount of Tazkirahs and Qasidahs. We have also realise that as we go along there’s more talks than qasidahs. To reach out to the hearts of the Jemaah, Qasidahs are an important element. Furthermore what’s a Majlis Selawat with very few Qasidahs right? Insyallah this will be work on for the next Selawat Session.

A review of external activities should be considered if it will fit the environment of Majlis. From yesterdays feedback, the (wedding ceremony) should not be inserted into the program as it did not fit the flow of the program or if that would be done, it could be planned better to make flow nicer. A more artistic direction would be considered to enhance the Majlis.

Whatever the feedbacks were, the committee understands the problems now and wish to keep improving the Majlis from siri to siri. We also would like to apologize on behalf of the committee if we lack in any matters during the session.

Let’s move on. Its confirm the next Majlis will be on the 5th of February 2012 in line with 12 Rabiulawal 1433H. This time Majlis Selawat is part of a 3 day Maulid programme by Sultan Mosque. Majlis will be on the 3rd day while the first two days there will be Forums, Competitions and more. Do look out for the details soon.

Jazakallah Khayran,

Ilm & Amal. This is what TWINS OF FAITH is all about. The theme Ilm & Amal became the two pillars that guides that 2 day event organised by MERCY MISSION as the objective is to learn as much as you can and apply the knowledge when necessary.

Yes the founders of Islamicevents.sg had a short trip to KL & Putrajaya (Where the event was) during the Christmas break to check out this grand event.

It was a full line up of International Speakers & Entertainers from Malaysia, Australia, UK and Canada.

The topics shared varied from Stories of the Prophets to Culture vs Religion and many more. During the some parts of the seminar, there were also workshops going on concurrently. Interestingly there was a match making session from what we heard.

In between the lectures, the guests were also entertained by Muslim Performers such as Bro Mu’adz from Malaysia and poets from UK like Bro Muslim Belal.

Watch this video..

Apart from that, there were also booths set up for the event goers to benefit from. What’s a 4,000 pax audience going to do during the breaks right?

Here are a few stalls that we patronised.

ISLAMIC BOOKS BLOGSHOP >>

You can visit their website @ www.ranahbukuislam,blogspot.com. This was the only booth that accepts Dinar & Dirham as payment during this event.

OWH SO MUSLIM >>

Owh so Muslim designs their own badges and does their own illustration. Above is owner, Bro Faiz and his family.

You can visit them at www.owhsomuslim.com to check out their products.

Feisty. Fiery. If you were somewhere in Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel (Singapore) on Saturday 27th November 2010 between 2pm to 7 pm, you would feel a lot of heat being emitted from a seminar venue on the third floor.

If Mt Merapi in Jogjakarta had spewed hot lava, then that roomful of passionate, highly ambitious, highly-assertive women was also ready to explode with energy created by the three speakers that afternoon. Ustaz Tarmizi Wahid, Ustazah Maimunah Alhabshi and Sister Suria Mohd had managed to bring out the fire in the hearts and minds of participants of the Islam, Women and Wealth Seminar.

Around 90-odd knowledge-hungry ladies and a handful of the male species turned up with hopes of being motivated and enlightened of the relationship that exists between Islam, Women and Wealth.

Who said that whoever who embraced Islam cannot embrace wealth at the same time?

Who said that wealth is a bad thing?

Who said that wealth and Islam need to be segregated?

Why must I conform to societal norms that women cannot be wealthy?

How do I combine wealth and Islam together?

Notice that yours truly here use “I” instead of “we”. “I”, “Me”, “Mine”. That afternoon was all about ME, the confident, and the financially independent ME!! Sis Suria had managed to drill all that into our brains all this time.

The ice breaker that afternoon was to go around the room and find people who share the same interest as ME. Coincidentally, I was sitting beside someone who loves to write, like ME. Madam Tina Jessamiene Goh, a success coach and consultant, does blogging and has two up her sleeves. The last row of chairs in the room was fully occupied by bakery chefs who turned up with their mentor, Kak Ros, who was once mentored by Sis Suria about her baking business. There were others from different lines of work, e.g. trainee teachers. Albeit the diversity of business backgrounds, all had the same objective in mind: How to improve my business in the way of Allah S.A. W.? Just as the networking chatters peaked to a crescendo, Sis Suria settled everyone down again and shared her story of how her illiterate mother has inspired her to be what she is today. After a walk through of her ups and down in the business arena, she handed the stage over to Ustaz Mizi.

The Al-Azhar University and Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah graduate warmed up the participants with a joke before reiterating the well-known fact that “behind every great man is a very great woman”. Citing examples of Nabi Ibrahim a.s. and Siti Hajar , and Mariam, the mother of Nabi Isa a.s., he stated that faith without work is nothing and vice-versa. The founder of Safinah Institute wants to dedicate his life to help others to see their true potential.

What if one day, you see an asatizah, *a person who seeks and shares religious knowledge*, come to class driving a red hot Lamborghini, carrying an LV bag, wearing shoes from Gucci, and a fat ring on the finger from Bucellati?

Ustazah Muna Alhabshi posted up this scenario on her Facebook page and received a myriad of responses, some batting their eyelids, while some stated their reasonable doubts. The founder of the Quranabics Course, Semantics Online and Soul Makeover then proceeded to give a beautiful explanation for “her personal research” on why there shouldn’t be a stereotype that religion and wealth shouldn’t go side by side.

The seminar closed with Sis Suria emphasizing the need for whoever that wants a successful business to “delete the virus that’s in your head”, i.e, remove all negative thoughts about yourself and think that you are the best.

Some follow-up initiatives to this Islam, Women and Wealth seminar are courses and programmes that are to be conducted by Ustaz Mizi, Ustazah Muna and Sis Suria. Ustaz Mizi will be conducting The Spiritual Confidence Programme, Ustazah Muna will be conducting Project Spirituality (ProjectSpirituality.com) and Learning Discoveries, under the helm of Sis Suria will be organizing 2 coaching sessions, The Money Breakthrough Method Coaching and Women Millionaire Mind Intensive.

All in all, everyone went home feeling more empowered after the impactful seminar. As long as they “spend in the way of Allah”, their wealth and business will be truly blessed. Insya Allah.

“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me”. Quran (2: 152)

Our resident reporter Ameera reporting on last week’s Pink Hijab Day

If you happened to be in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) or National Institute of Education (NIE) on Wednesday, 27th October 2010, you probably would have noticed many pink-clad heads bobbing through the student population. No, it is not a uniform for female Muslim students, it was actually Pink Hijab Day!

While this was the first time NTU Muslim Society celebrated Pink Hijab Day (PHD), it actually started in 2004 in Missouri, USA. Their aim was to encourage others to ask about the hijab & Islam and concurrently, spread awareness for breast cancer and raise funds for breast cancer research.

For a debut, PHD was a success in NTU. They had a booth that sold pink hijabs, pink roses, cupcakes, breast cancer pins and popcorn. They even had a Henna booth that proved popular with the crowd. All the proceeds went towards the Breast Cancer Foundation. The friendly ladies also gave out brochures & pamphlets regarding breast cancer and were more than willing to share their experiences about the hijab & Islam.

As PHD was held during NTU Muslim Society’s Islamic Awareness Week, there were other exhibition panels around that not only explained the importance of hijab in Islam, but detailed the use of a miswak & non-alcoholic perfumes, the place animals have in Islam and also the definition of halal meat!

The male students were not to be left out as some came to school wearing pink shirts and for the less daring or equipped, a red & white combination proved their support for Pink Hijab Day. The event ended with a sharing session at night as sisters shared their experiences when they first donned the hijab and also the challenges they had to go through during the process.

It was rumoured that a local madrasah also took part in Pink Hijab Day. Is that true? Submit your pictures or sharings to ameera@islamicevents.sg!

Here’s the thing, we have been receiving emails, calls, facebook personal messages about “Whether Maher Zain will be coming to Perform in Singapore”. As some of you would know Maher Zain and his team will be coming again to Southeast Asia again in February. It’s not just going to be Brunei and KL this time, I heard they are really going to tour the different states in Malaysia and maybe Singapore or Jakarta.

The Challenge

One of our contacts recently set up a Maher Zain Singapore Facebook Fan page yesterday. Within a day 100 people have already pressed LIKE.

So here’s what’s going to really happen. Maher Zain will only be here if there is a really significant number of support by the Singaporean Fans. At least 5,000 fans. In our honest opinion 5,000 isn’t good enough, we need at least 50,000 likes. This would be a good indicator for the organisers to find it worth the time, effort and money spent on such big events.

On the 3rd of October 2010, over 60 youths arrived bright & early on their Sunday at An-Nahdhah Mosque at Bishan. It was for none other than the Young Caliph Seminar organised by Moral Human & Development Society (MHDS). The seminar was targeted at tertiary students and indeed, participants ranged from students studying in polytechnics, junior colleges, higher madrasah & also the Institutes of Technical Education.

Ustaz Hasan Saifouridzal started the event by presenting the paper “Do we need to align ourselves to a Mazhab?”. It was a thoroughly refreshing & engaging presentation that was given in Malay but interspersed with English & peppered with anecdotes & stories about the Prophet SAW and his Companions. He presented the challenging issue in a manner that was clear & concise, explaining the conditions for ijtihad & the prerequisites of a mujtahid. He also spoke on length about the impermissibility of Do-It-Yourself Fiqh, picking & choosing certain rulings for one’s own benefit, but carefully detailed the conditions in which this had to be done, for example performing taqlid to the Hanafi Mazhab during Hajj.

The question and answer session that followed his talk was equally engaging & intellectual. Questions were asked about Shi’ism and also why the majority of Singaporean Muslims are of the Shafi’e mazhab, instead of the others. Ustaz Hasan did well to quell doubts & expounded his answer in a most satisfactory way.

There was a short break as participants and presenters alike enjoyed their breakfast meal. At this juncture, I managed to talk to several of the participants, two of whom were students in ITE Bishan. Atiqah, 18, and Zana, 19, had decided to attend the seminar together. They were attracted “because the seminar was about finding identity” and had wanted to find out more. Another youth that I managed to speak to was Rashid, 19, from Singapore Polytechnic. He had attended previous talks by Ustaz Hasan Saifouridzal and had enjoyed them, therefore deciding to come for the seminar when he found out the Ustaz was going to be presenting. Being a youth himself, he also thought he could benefit from a seminar that was targeted at tertiary students, and develop religiously.

After the break, an upcoming Ustaz who recently graduated from the University of Al-Azhar took the stage. With his gentle demeanor, ceaseless smile & easygoing nature, it wasn’t difficult to enjoy listening to him speak. Despite his young age, Ustaz Nuzhan presented a seemingly challenging topic of “Where is Allah?” with ease and confidence. Speaking comfortably in English, Malay & Arabic, he constantly emphasized the importance of inculcating the Muslim identity in combating needless indoctrination by others. He spoke out against the agenda of certain ideologies and reiterated the significance of being conscious of where you take your knowledge.

Throughout his talk, he repeated the line from Surah as-Shura, verse 11 “Laisa kamithlihi shay’un” or “There is nothing whatever like unto Him”, to strengthen the participants’ foundation of the deen.

I managed to have a short chat with Ustaz Nuzhan as the rest prepared for zuhr prayers. He lamented the lack of purpose that was inherent in the Malay/Muslim youth of Singapore, citing the lack of alternative entertainment as a major factor. He hopes to cause a “resurgence of a Muslim identity” and counted on the participants of the seminar to be “trend-setters among their circle of friends and be catalysts of change”.

After zuhr prayers, Ustaz TM Fouzy took over with his brand of ESQ (Emotional Spiritual Quotient), aptly named TMQ. In his presentation, he highlighted the sacrifices that the Prophet SAW and parents have done and advocated service & good manners to parents. He also spoke about ingratitude and how easily Man forget the ni’mah, or gifts that Allah has bestowed on him. It was a highly emotional & spiritual presentation, resulting in sobs from some of the participants.

All in all, it was an exceedingly successful seminar, with quite a handful of the participants hoping for a follow up of the event.

“I didn’t become a Muslim because I was invited to, I didn’t become a Muslim because of researching and reading the Quran but I become a Muslim because of a boy who demonstrated what Islam is all about to me one day while I was in Egypt”

In this article we would like to highlight one single lesson that we took away from that lecture on Sunday 26th July 2009. To be an Exemplry Muslim.

You never know who you can inspire and who you can influence to be a Muslim. So Bro Idris explained to us that during the day of judgement when that boy is faced infront of Allah and his sins and good deeds are being recalled by the Angels, he will be in a shock of his life. Because for that one good moment that he did, would grant him endless streams of good deeds which he might not even know. This could even overweigh his sins and grant him a place in Allah swt heavens. Insyallah.

Have we been Examplry Muslims to others?

Well saying is easy right? But practising isn’t but in truth it is simple.

All the boy did when he met Bro Idris ( before he converted ) was to say Assalammualaikum ( Peace be upon you ). And when he asked the boy, “How are you”. The boy replied, “Alhamdullillah”.

Its just pure simple actions, words and sincerety manage to open the hearts of Bro Idris. So Brother Idris was moved and realised how Beautiful Islam is.

We will leave you to that to ponder on it…. With just simple actions you can demonstrate the Beauty of our religion.

Here we leave with you a video of how Bro Idris converted to Islam.
